พระ
บาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้า ฯ เมื่อเสร็จขึ้นครองราชสมบัติเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๓๒๕
ได้ทรงมีพระราชดำริว่า
ทางฝั่งตะวันออกของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาตรงข้ามกับพระราชวังเดิมของกรุงธนบุรี
เป็นชัยภูมิเหมาะสมที่จะตั้งเป็นพระมหานคร
เนื่องจากเป็นพื้นที่แหลมยื่นออกมามีความเหมาะสมทางยุทธศาสตร์เพราะได้แม่
น้ำเป็นคูเมืองทางด้านตะวันตก และด้านใต้ จึงได้โปรดเกล้า ฯ ให้พระยาวิจิตรนาวีกับพระยาธรรมาธิบดีเป็น
แม่กอง สถาปนาพระราชวังแห่งใหม่ณ ที่บ้านพระยาราชาเศรษฐี และหมู่บ้านชาวจีน
โดยให้พระยาราชาเศรษฐีนำพวกจีนไปตั้งบ้านเรือนอยู่ใหม่ในที่สวนตั้งแต่คลอง
ใต้วันสามปลื้มจนถึงคลองเหนือวัดสำเพ็ง
และมีรับสั่งให้ไปรื้อกำแพงและป้อมกรุงศรีอยุธยาเพื่อเอาอิฐมาสร้างกำแพงและ
ป้อมปราการกรุงเทพฯ
เพื่อมิให้กรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นที่อาศัยของข้าศึกโปรดเกล้าฯ
ให้สร้างพระอารามขึ้นในพระราชวังและอัญเชิญพระพุทธมหามณีรัตนปฏิมากรมา
ประดิษฐานและพระราชทานนามพระอารามใหม่นี้ว่า วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม
พระราชวัง
ที่สร้างขึ้นใหม่นี้ได้ถ่ายแบบจากพระราชวังหลวงของกรุงศรีอยุธยามา
ทุกอย่างกล่าวคือ สร้างชิดแม่น้ำ หันหน้าวังขึ้นเหนือน้ำ
เอาแม่น้ำไว้ข้างซ้ายพระราชวังเอากำแพงเมืองด้านข้างแม่น้ำเป็นกำแพง
พระราชวังชั้นนอก การวางผังพระที่นั่งต่างๆ ก็เช่นเดียวกัน คือ
หมู่พระมหามณเฑียรตรงกับพระวิหารสมเด็จ
พระที่นั่งดุสิตมหาปราสาทตรงกับพระที่นั่งสุริยาสน์อมรินทร์วัดพระศรีรัตน
ศาสดารามตรงกับวัดพระศรีสรรเพชร รวมเนื้อที่ประมาณ ๑๓๒ ไร่

มหาราววังเดิมสร้างด้วยเครื่องไม้
ส่วนวัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดารามสร้างด้วยอิฐถือปูน ป้อมและกำแพงวังก่อด้วยอิฐ
ซุ้มประตูเป็นประตูเครื่องยอดไม้ทรงมณฑปทาสีดินแดง เช่นเดียวกับสมัยอยุธยา
ในสมัยพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัยได้ขยายพระราชวังด้านใต้ออกไปเช่นทุกวันนี้
