บริเวณทิวเขาสันกาลาคีรี
แนวชายแดนไทย-มาเลเซีย อ.แว้ง จ.นราธิวาสการเดินทาง
จากหาดใหญ่ ใช้ทางหลวงหมายเลข
43 ผ่าน อ.โคกโพธิ์ เข้า จ.ปัตตานี จากนั้นใช้ทางหลวง หมายเลข 42 จนถึง อ.บาเจาะ
จ.นราธิวาส แล้วใช้ทางหลวงหมายเลข 4055 และ 4056 ผ่าน อ.สุไหงปาดี จากนั้นแยกเข้าทางหลวงหมายเลข
4057 ไป อ.แว้ง ไปต่อจนถึงบ้านบูเก๊ะตา ก่อนถึง เขตแดน จะเห็นป้ายบอกทางไปเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าฮาลา-บาลา
และน้ำตกสิรินธร เลี้ยวขวาไป ตามทางหลวงหมายเลข 4062 ที่ทำการเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าฮาลา
บาลา จะอยู่ทางด้านขวามือ ส่วนน้ำตกสิรินธรจะอยู่เลยไปไม่ไกลนัก. หากมาทางรถไฟ ซึ่งมาสุดที่สถานีปลายทางสุไหงโก-ลก
ก็สามารถจ้างเหมารถรับจ้าง มาส่ง ที่เขตฯ หรือน้ำตกได้เป็นพื้นที่อนุรักษ์แห่งใหม่ของประเทศไทย
โดยประกาศจัดตั้งอย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2539 ตั้งอยู่บริเวณทิวเขาสันกาลาคีรีอันเป็นแนวชายแดนไทย-มาเลเซีย
มีพื้นที่รับผิดชอบประมาณ 270,725 ไร่ ประกอบด้วยผืนป่าดงดิบที่สมบูรณ์ 2
ส่วน คือ ป่าฮาลา ในเขต อ.เบตง จ.ยะลา อ.จะแนะ จ.นราธิวาส และป่าบาลา ในเขต
อ.แว้ง อ.สุคิริน จ.นราธิวาสด้วยสภาพป่าพื้นที่เกือบทั้งหมดของเขตฯ
เป็นเทือกเขาสลับซับซ้อนและปกคลุมด้วยป่าดงดิบ หรือป่าฝน ที่อุดมสมบูรณ์อย่างยิ่ง
กอปรกับมีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับพื้นที่ป่าขนาดใหญ่ของประเทศ มาเลเซีย จึงทำให้ผืนป่าฮาลา-บาลา
เป็นแหล่งอาศัยของพืชพรรณและสัตว์ป่าที่หายากจำนวนมาก หลายชนิดจะพบเห็นได้เฉพาะบริเวณป่าแถบนี้เท่านั้นสำหรับผู้ที่สนใจกิจกรรมท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศ
โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการดูนก ดูผีเสื้อ หรือศึกษา พรรณไม้ สามารถเดินทางมาสัมผัสและศึกษาธรรมชาติทางฟากป่าบาลาได้โดยไม่ยาก
ทั้งนี้เพราะอยู่ ไม่ไกลจาก อ.สุไหงโก-ลก และมีทางหลวงหมายเลข 4062 ซึ่งเป็น
ถนนลาดยางอย่างดีตัดผ่านพื้นที่ ป่า และแหล่งศึกษาธรรมชาติจุดต่างๆนอกจากนี้ยังสามารถเดินทางท่องเที่ยวแบบไปเช้าเย็นกลับได้ระหว่างป่าบาลากับ
อ.สุไหงโก-ลก โดยไม่จำเป็นต้องไปค้างแรมในพื้นที่ป่าแต่อย่างใดฤดูกาลที่เหมาะแก่การมาท่องเที่ยวศึกษาธรรมชาติที่เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าฮาลา-บาลา
